Background and AimThe mortality rate for patients with end-stage renal disease does not happen by hemodialysis. However, they would experience several complications that can impact their quality of life. Renal transplantation improves the physical aspect of life quality. The purpose of this study is to compare the quality of life in patients undergoing hemodialysis and kidney transplantation in Birjand. Materials and MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 60 hemodialysis patients referring to Valieasr Hospital and 58 patients with kidney transplantations in Birjand who had inclusion criteria were selected. The data collection instrument was SF-36questionnaire whose reliability was calculated as 0.65 by Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed SPSS (v ersion 16) using independent t-test, ANOVA, Range Tukey and Pearson. ResultsThe mean scores for quality of life in hemodialysis and transplant patients were 40.03±18.63 and 69.08±11.03 respectively. The overall mean score for quality of life and its areas was significantly more in transplant than hemodialysis patients (P=0.0001). ConclusionGiven the lower quality of life in hemodialysis patients, it is desirable to facilitate the process of transplantation as soon as possible and to make plans to improve patients’ quality of life until they have transplantations.
