Backgrounad and AimCataract is the greatest cause of blindness in the world and it is responsible for half of all blindness. Cataract means any opacity in lens and surgery is the single effective treatment to reduce its blindness at this time. This study was done to assess the epidemiology of patients with Cataract who operated in Vali-Asr and Mehr hospitals 2003- 2004. Materials and MethodsIn this descriptive- analytic study a questionnaire was used about age, sex, location of life, visual acuity, kind of Cataract, systemic and ophthalmic disease. All patients (386) from Aug. until Jan .were studied. Results123 (32%) patients were urban and 263 (68%) patients were rural. 6 (1.6%) patients had diabetic Cataract. 200 (52%) patients were men and 186 (48%) patients were women and the study didn't show any relation between sex and Cataract. The most common kind of Cataract in males and females was senile Cataract. Traumatic Cataract was seen in 9 (4.8%) householder women. In male group 151 (75.5%) patients had senile Cataract and 105 (83%) patients were farmer. ConclusionThis study suggests the important role of ultraviolet radiation in human cataractogenesis especially in farmers, and housekeeping considered an effective risk factor in traumatic cataract in women, so it is recommended to study more exactly about relation between nutrition and cataract.
