A comparative study of lecturing and presenting pamphlets methods in nursing students' learning and satisfaction

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Background and Aim: </strong>Nursing education can remain dynamic through innovation and application of new learning and teaching methods. Achieving this goal requires modern teaching methods by university professors in their teaching plans. The present study was performed to compare the effects of traditional teaching method (based on giving notes) with lecturing on nursing students' learning and satisfaction.<br>
<strong>Materials and Methods: </strong>This quasi-experimental study was done on 28 apprentice nursing students, who were divided into two equal case and control groups in the pediatric ward of Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad. The educational content was presented in the form of educational booklet in the case group and lecture in the control group. Data collection included a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of three sections including demographic information, learning assessment, and satisfaction assessment of students, as well as an open question. The questionnaire was administered after its reliability and validity was confirmed (Cronbach α=0.82). The obtained data was analyzed in SPSS software (V: 11.5) using descriptive and analytical statistics at the significant level P<0.05.<br>
<strong>Results:</strong> Mean score of posttest in the booklet group was 17.16±1.18, and in the lecture group, it was 15.66±1.45, which showed a significant increase compared with the pretest (P<0.001). The rate of learning in the booklet method was significantly more than the lecture method (P=0.015). Besides, students' satisfaction with the booklet method (31.5±7.73) was significantly more (P<0.001).<br>
<strong>Conclusion: </strong>Taking into account that most of the specialized nursing courses are clinically presented during apprenticeship, using textual booklet as a student-centered method is recommended.a</span></span></div>
